Poesia Breve
Published in 2006, Poesia Breve is a collection of haikus and photography. The haikus were originally hosted in a “daily haiku” blog which I ran a few months previous to publishing the book. It was a simple green layout with small pixel yellow flowers: very fitting for such small poems.
After I graduated college my haiku writing faltered and eventually ceased all together. Instead of keeping an updated haiku website or deleting the haikus entirely, I decided to try out the self-publishing industry just so I could keep them all together and in my living room. Thus, this was my first attempt with lulu.com, but I was so pleased with the printing of my book that it certainly won’t be my last.
The photography I added as an after thought; I decided that it fit well with the theme of “short poetry” (as “poesia breve” translates directly from Italian) to include pictures. It may be true that the stories behind them are lost in memory and thus inaccessable to purchasers of the book, but I believe the idea that each photograph contains an entire story is similar to the idea that each short poem hides a world of description.
The photographs, unfortunately, are black-and-white. They’re clear and crisp, but don’t contain any of the original color. Sections are separated by a light grey flower print - the same that was used in the original site layout. Contents include:
I. Haikus That Don’t Make Sense
II. Haikus Inspired By More Brilliant Authors
III. Autobiographical
IV. Slightly Obscene and Possibly Offensive
V. Miscellaneous
